Dubbed the future of smartphone AI photography, the slick range was officially launched at an event held at The Galleria in Sandton. South Africa Huawei Consumer Business Group unveiled the much-anticipated Huawei P20 and Huawei P20 Pro, barely a week after the global launch in Paris. The event, which encouraged attendees to #SeeMooore, included an immersive AI reality experience from Huawei, a mini fashion show by designer Gavin Rajah, and musical performances by Lady Zamar and Timo ODV.
“The Huawei P20 series is built on unprecedented AI advances, combining technology and art to bring to life a groundbreaking smartphone experience,” says Akhram Mohamed, Marketing Director “We are ushering in a new era of smartphone cameras that combine the very latest in smartphone technology with Leica Camera’s legendary expertise, driven by artificial intelligence. Essentially, we give users the tools to achieve professional photography results with every single shot.”
An exquisite combination of art and technology for the fashion forward
Regarding design, the Huawei P20 series features a striking, stylish aesthetic and comes in all-new, exclusive colours, Twilight and, along with Black and Midnight Blue. Each colour reflects a gradual change of hue. Mohamed. “At the heart of the design DNA of these phones is light. From camera and display to the colour options, light inspiration has led to the beautiful creation of gradient colours – a first on a smartphone.”
The 5.8-inch screen Huawei P20 and 6.1-inch screen Huawei P20 Pro feature ultra-thin bezels and impressive screen-to-body ratios for better viewing experiences with more on-screen information. The Huawei FullView Display offers an immersive experience whether the user is gaming, watching videos, reading or browsing the Internet, and the phone’s rounded edges make it extremely comfortable to hold. Also, the phone’s fast performance system and long battery life ensure that ultimate performance is achieved every time.
Inspired by light and technology
By combining the world’s first triple-lens Leica camera and exciting innovation driven by artificial intelligence, Huawei delivers the most exceptional photography experience possible. Zhao explains the process behind this, “Huawei worked closely with photographers and specialists at Leica Camera AG to develop and engineer a new generation of ‘intelligent’ phone that allows users to easily master the art of taking the perfect photograph. As a result, the P20 Series devices know what makes a good picture. The phone automatically recognises and adjusts settings according to the subject matter to help enhance results, as well as give guidance on composition and framing, providing users with a lifetime of professional knowledge in an instant.”
P20 features that turn photographers from amateurs to pros in a matter of minutes include:
• Automatically determining the shooting modes and parameter settings for different scenes
• Learning users’ photo-taking habits to deliver a more professional imaging effect.
• Huawei AI Image Stabilisation (AIS), which eliminates blurry shots at night or in low-light conditions, even without a tripod.
• Ultra Snapshot mode, where the devices can capture an image in as little as 0.3 seconds, even from an off screen.
• Six-axis stabilisation and 960fps super slow motion, which is 4x higher than the standard 240fps and captures details that cannot be seen with the naked eye.
• 4D predictive focus, where the camera predicts moving objects and focuses on them with extreme efficiency to capture minute details of these objects in motion.
• A 24MP selfie camera with AI beautification, which captures the smallest details and brings selfies to life through natural skin tone enhancements, delicately outlined face shapes, and 3D facial feature adjustments.
